The paramedic, Chris, is the only person that has said anything worthwhile of all the postings I have read on any subject on this site. On all matters, let common sense and common courtesy prevail.

If you really want to see some blank stares, ask if this elevator will take you to the end of the hall. By the time anybody with a brain figures out what you just asked, the doors will have closed and nobody can bust you in the nose.

I work in a building with six floors, and I almost always use the elevator. I have knee problems, and walking or down (down is worse, honestly) is murder on my knees. I don't feel the need to explain myself to people, but I did have a guy who made a comment to himself about how I should have taken the stairs. I just turned around and said 'Not that it's any of your business, but I have an issue with my knee where taking the elevator saves me hours of pain and discomfort, but thanks for your concern for my apparently lack of exercise.'

Yeah, that shut him up, and got me a wink from the lady in the elevator too.

When confronted with ignorance, I tend to be more ignorant! When approaching my exit floor I position myself in the middle of the door opening and CHARGE as soon as the doors part. I always win because that ignorant idiot ready to barge on is not expecting me to be charging off. And I usually have a snide remark ready such as let me off and there will be room for you to get on. Maybe there should be a web site for door holding rules also.....

Also... i know that in some cases, continually holding a door back can be bad for an elevator motor... however, if I feel that I want to stop the door for someone, I may use my hand at the door instead of the door open button but only because in some elevators it's like trying to decipher hiroglyphs as the doors are quickly closng... if time is a factor, I will stick my hand into the door catch 10 time out of 10.

What you're saying is... he's too rude to wait five seconds, when in fact, he may have to wait several minutes depending on the availability of elevators in the building and you would literally on have to wait about 10 seconds for him to board and the doors to re-close. If he feels he has somewhere he needs to be, then that's his perogative... if you have a problem waiting for him, take the stairs.
